Making sense of reference values.

An amount and a percentage give you different information.

Amount first, percentage second

The quantity tells you how much of a nutrient the stated serving provides. The reference percentage expresses that quantity relative to the reference basis used by the label. Keep the nutrient, amount, unit and serving together.

Watch the units

A milligram and a microgram are different units: 1 mg equals 1,000 µg. Copying a number without its unit can completely change its meaning.

More is not a ranking

A larger percentage does not establish that a product is better for a particular person. The comparison is descriptive; it does not recommend combining products or increasing the label’s daily intake.

Missing is not zero

When a source does not state a value, the website shows a dash or a review notice. It does not calculate a new amount or infer that the nutrient is absent.
